Recycled Bag Rug

Well I finally managed to get this project completed. And just as I was finishing the last row of this rug, I went to my Mom's house and she had 4 or 5 bags full of more......(you guessed it!) bags!

I do want to make more bags and maybe a couple more rugs. That way I can use the bags at the grocery store.

  1. I love the rug! Who's bags did you use for what stripes? It's so colourful.

  2. Awesome! What size hook do you use and what is the width of the bag yarn? Do you have a pattern for this? I would LOVE to do one of these!

  3. Thank you for the great comments! I used an "M" hook for this and no, I didn't write up a pattern, I just measured the size of the area I put it in and went from there. Tons of measuring. I used bags from Wal-Mart, Giant Eagle, Drug Mart, Marc's, etc. Basically any that were not ripped.

  4. Okay, so the strips had to be pretty thick in order to use an M hook huh? I cut up some the other day for the first time that were 1" wide and used a J hook and wow, lots of holes.

  5. Grace, I am wondering how you cut the bags? are they in loops or long strips? That might be the issue.

  6. I hit "enter" too quickly. This is the link to make the "plarn": http://www.marloscrochetcorner.com/bag%20cutting%20instructions.html

  7. I was doing one ply and only 1" width; looks like I need 2-ply and more like 1.5 to 2" width.

Does the rug stay in place on the floor?

Here's the video for how to make it 1 ply (which I thought was quite interesting - and no knots, but maybe doing it the other way would be better?):

  8. First of all, let me apologize, I called you Grace, when it should be Tamara. I am very sorry!
My rug is in a particular place where it is fitted, so it doesn't slide around too much. I would guess that if it is on a slippery floor it might slide a little more.
And when I wash it I just hang it over the deck and spray it down and that's it!
